Study of Improving Reliability and Maintainability on
Gantry Crane by Analysis of Maintenance Records
Hitoshi KANEKO
Abstract
Recently container ships have been upsized and even a 11,000TEU containership entered into service in 2006. With the above background,a gantry crane (crane, hereafter)at a container terminal has been upsized as well and its handling rate of container has become larger by using state-of-the-art techniques. To speed up the handling rate, the double-hoist and traverse system are employed which are more sophisticated in mechanism. This would more likely cause malfunction, which, in turn, results in tremendous delay in cargo-handling time and consequently ship departure. Both-shipside-cargo-handling has been introduced these days at Ceres Paragon Terminal, Amsterdam. When it causes malfunction, a ship is blocked in the dock and delayed.

While a crane affects berth utilization, cargo handling time and ships operation, no intensive study has been conducted about its reliability and maintainability from the practical and statistical viewpoint. This study is to evaluate the crane reliability and maintainability by analyzing the maintenance records which were collected over 2.5 years and discuss the method of improving the reliability and maintainability of the crane.
