Melvillefs 9th and last novel,The Confidence-Man is studded with allusions to Shakespeare, and the misanthropic
spirit of Timon is the key to detecting what lies behind all those eight masks of the confidence man. There often
appear such words as gcharity, hgconfidence, hgtrust, hand gdistrusththroughout the text.Charity and trust are what
the con man outwardly advocates and tries to gain from the gfoolshon the steamer, Fidele, which goes down the
Mississippi, whereas distrust of man and disbelief of Christianity are the ultimate outcome of his masquerade. |
